Habits of Really Healthy People Advice from a Newington Connecticut Personal Trainer

Our Personal Trainer in Newington Connecticut offered us up a list of things that are usually common among seriously healthy people.  If you are not already doing some of these, then start today.

We all know super healthy people.  Did you ever wonder how they get that way? Are they just genetically gifted? Are they simply more motivated than you are? Do they slave at the gym and eat only green leafy vegetables, never allowing ice cream to touch their lips?

We asked our Newington Connecticut Personal Trainer what his take was on super healthy people.

He said that really healthy people are normally not ‘just born that way.”  It is typically by design.

“Most healthy people I know do put effort into their health,” says our Personal Trainer in Newington Connecticut. “They take steps to become healthy, improve their health, and then maintain their health. The good news is that there are small things you can do to become healthy too, and the little things can often add up in a big way.”

  1. Don’t Smoke—If you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you do smoke, find a way to quit and remain smoke-free. There is nothing healthy about smoking, and for those people who are otherwise healthy, but who do smoke—they will never attain the level of good health that they want or should have as long as they can’t kick the habit. Everyone knows the dangers of smoking; from cancer to emphysema, and that also goes for second-hand smoke. It’s a danger and needs to be eradicated.
  2. Never Skip Breakfast—Your mother used to tell you “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” There is definitely some truth to that. First of all, you jump start your metabolism with breakfast, after having had no fuel for the night. It gets your body going. Second, it helps your mind function. Studies have shown that not only do test subjects perform better on mental acuity and concentration tests, but they also perform better at work. Kids fare better at school when they have breakfast. Additionally, eating something earlier in the day will prevent you from overeating later.

“You don’t have to eat a lot,” says our Personal Trainer in Newington CT, “but it does help to eat something. Even if it’s only a cup of yogurt and a banana.”

  1. Drink Water—Most people do not drink nearly enough water, says our Newington Connecticut Personal Trainer. You need to hydrate your body for optimal function. In addition, proper water intake aids in weight loss. Sugary and caffeinated beverages do not cut it; they are linked to obesity and diabetes. Our Personal Trainer in Newington Connecticut suggests filling up a gallon jug – or several liter jugs, and aim to finish all of those ounces by the end of the day, pacing yourself along the way, i.e, have a quart drunk by mid morning, another quart drunk between lunch and dinner, another by dinner and one before 8pm, or some type of similar schedule. It will keep you mindful of how much you are drinking until it becomes a (healthy) habit.
  2. Get Active and Stay Active—Make sure you move your body! Instead of getting another cup of joe, do some stretches to help wake yourself up at work. More importantly, make vigorous exercise part of your routine, even if it is only a couple of days a week. Walking is a good place to start, but do not underestimate the power of strength and resistance training!

Our Newington Connecticut Personal Trainer says that he sees this all the time. Sedentary people living sedentary lifestyles. Then they suddenly become motivated to start a strength training regimen. The difference they see is encouraging. They start to enjoy the feeling of empowerment. They begin to feel great, have more energy and lose weight. Building lean muscle is one of the best ways to keep your body metabolically active so that you burn more calories at rest. Plus there is nothing nicer to look at than a lean, tone, fit body. Do it for vanity and get good health as a byproduct, or vice versa!

  1. Sleep—Don’t underestimate the benefits of a good night’s sleep, says our Personal Trainer in Newington CT. Especially if you are exercising. Sleep helps our bodies to repair themselves and also recharges the mind. It keeps you in a better mood, helps you to maintain clearer focus and lucidity. It actually can aid in keeping your cortisol (stress hormone) levels  lower, which in turn will help to keep you slim. You should always try to get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep on average.
  2. Take time off from the Techno-world—Our Newington Connecticut Personal Trainer mentions how in tune we are with technology but as a result, we are not as in tune with other things around us—our families, relationships, etc. He suggests setting aside time to unplug from our iPad, iPod, smartphone, computer, etc and reconnect with our loved ones, take a walk, read a book, listen to some music, meditate, call a friend, etc. The sense of well-being derived from doing activities that are not tech-related will transcend into added happiness and good health.
