How to Pick a Personal Trainer in Newington CT

The top personal trainer in Newington CT explains how…

…how to make a the very important decision of which trainer is right for you!

Long gone are the days where the biggest guy in the gym is the personal trainer in Newington, CT. This use to be an industry based on looks and looks alone. So the guy in the corner lifting the most weight with the biggest biceps was sure enough going to be the that facility’s personal trainer in Newington. Now, I am not saying that it isn’t important to practice what you preach, BUT these has become an industry based on knowledge, experience, and education. While there use to be a stigma that being a Newington personal trainer was for “the meat-heads with no drive and just wanted to live in the gym”, I am here to hopefully prove that is no longer the case!

As a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist who has been training for almost 10 years as well as years of managerial experience and the top personal trainer in Newington CT, I can tell you first hand that this industry is ever changing! While I will still get the occasional “drive-less, meathead” or the person who “likes to work out” and thinks that this will be an “easy job”; for the most part, a lot of the younger Newington personal trainers coming up have the passion for health and wellness as well as the educational background.

How do YOU find the right personal trainer in Newington, CT?

Well first things first, ask the Newington Personal Trainer the right questions during your consultation! The first thing you always want to ask is “are you certified?” Now this is a great place to start but you can’t stop there. Unfortunately, this is an industry where 1. You don’t have to be a certified personal trainer in Newington Connecticut and 2. Not every certification is the same. What you are looking for is a certification that has been accredited by a national accreditation organization such as NCCA. Why is this important? Well, there are plenty of certifications out there that can be easily obtained by simply paying a few dollars and taking a weekend online seminar. Would you trust a surgeon with a degree from the University of Phoenix who has learned their trade by watching a couple youtube videos? I don’t think so. The gym can be a dangerous place, so why would you trust somebody who doesn’t have a basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology? A quality certification will have an extensive study outline (sometimes including actual classes) and will require passing an even more extensive test.

The fitness industry has grown so much that most colleges will offer a 4 year bachelor’s degree in exercise science as well as offering master’s degrees in exercise science. In the past, the only people who would obtain these degrees would be professionals heading down the Physical Therapy path OR Professional Sports Strength and Conditioning Coaches. Now, there are quite a few personal trainers who have started their career with a degree in exercise science degree.

Having the education is crucial, but another aspect that is extremely important is experience! Having all the textbook knowledge is great but being able to implement it is even more important. There are plenty of well educated Newington Personal Trainers out there that can sit and recite verbatim what they’ve learned in class, but can’t find their way around the gym?

The final thing you want to look for is personality. Personal Training is called PERSONAL training because it is a very intimate personal experience. Generally, most people that seek a Newington CT personal trainer don’t: 1. Enjoy working out 2. Don’t know where to get started and 3. Are often intimidated by the whole process. This is why it is necessary to have someone who can guide you in a positive, emotional, effective, and efficient manner!

These are the main attributes that you need to look for when searching for a personal trainer. It is important to do your research and make sure you have questions to ask! Every trainer is also a teacher and if they are unwilling to answer your questions then they are not a good fit! As the manager of Newington CT’s top Personal Trainer Studio, these are the same attributes that I look for when hiring new personal trainers!
